The Chosen Man

By J.G. Harlond

Historical fiction, Action & adventure, General fiction | Paperback, eBook

Rome, 1635: A Spanish count presents the Vatican with a brilliant plan. They just need the right man to implement it. Enter Ludovico da Portovenere, a charismatic spice and silk merchant sailing for Amsterdam. But Ludo's voyage is interrupted by a timid English priest with a message from Rome, then by a storm, then by a pirate raid. The storm brings him a quick-witted young admirer he uses as a spy. The pirate raid brings him a girl, Alina, who won’t go home. Set in a world of international politics and domestic intrigue, 'The Chosen Man' spins an engrossing tale about how decisions made in high places can have terrible repercussions on innocent lives. Winner of a 'Discovered Diamond' award.

A gripping tale of political and religious intrigue and the innocents and not-so-innocents caught up in the 1635 Tulip Mania scandal. At the heart of the trans-European journey-story is a combustible duo formed by the irresistible rogue and con artist/entrepreneur, Ludovico da Portovenere, and the fiery Spanish beauty, Alina. The duo is separated when Ludo brokers a shipboard deal that lands Alina at an English country estate with a subdued husband and in dangerous propinquity to a true villain and predator, McNab. Meanwhile Ludo travels on to Amsterdam and becomes an accelerant in the financial scandal known as TulipMania. Satisfying climax as Ludo returns to England but things are not as expected. The Chosen Man is a compelling blend of historical fiction and thriller. I hope to see more of Alina and Ludo!
